Steven Teng began his music studies with piano at the age of seven, followed with violin studies at the age of 14. With his passion for music and the violin, he was able to accelerate his studies and achieve great results in a short period of time. Steven gained the top band in Music Extension for his HSC. As a constant performer, he has been commended as a musician with exuberant flair. Undoubtedly, this is one of the traits that have placed him comfortably at the top of his cohort, where he received a Preliminary offer to study a Bachelor of Music (Performance) degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with an Entry Scholarship from the University of Sydney, valued at $6000. At the Con, Steven has worked with renown violin teachers including Robin Wilson, Peter Zhang, Chris Kimber and Ole Bohn. Steven has also worked very closely with Peter Wang in Piano Pedagogy and Performance.
Whilst at the Sydney Conservatorium, Steven gained High Distinction across all his Harmony and Analysis studies and Advanced Harmony subjects, and Distinction in Strings Pedagogy (art of teaching the violin), Aural Perception, Music History, Chamber Music and Orchestral Studies. Steven is very experienced in teaching theory/musicianship and preparing students for the aural and general knowledge components for practical exams.
Steven is a hard worker and this has been shown through his strong commitment towards his education. Throughout his secondary schooling, Steven took up the challenge to become School Captain, whilst maintaining a strong academic record by becoming dux in five of his subjects including Music 2, Music Extension, English Advanced, English Extension 1 and Japanese Beginners. This made Steven a role model for all others to follow within his school.
Steven is an active pianist and violinist and has performed extensively throughout his years of studies, to share his love for music and develop his wide repertoire. He has been involved with The Arts Unit since 2007, where he has appeared as soloist with the orchestra, performing at the Salvation Army Congress Hall, and also taking on leadership roles in Orchestra at State Music Camp. He was also in the Symphony Orchestra, performing in venues including the Sydney Opera House. Steven also participated in Schools Spectacular in 2007-8, exploring pop cultured music, diversifying his range of musical interests and performing at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
Early 2009, Steven was involved with the Australian Youth Olympics Festival’s Opening Ceremony held at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, where he appeared as a featured artist, performing Bonds’ ‘Explosive’ with passion and energy.
Steven won the 2011 Edna Wilde Scholarship for most exciting performance for 2 or more instruments and the 2010 Galston Eisteddfod Instrumental championship, where his performance at the award ceremony received a standing ovation.
In December 2012, along with Head of School Peter Wang, Steven gave a Recital in Taipei, Taiwan as a featured artist for the MIKI corporation.
Stevens love for teaching has no doubt been shown through his students. His students have performed well in AMEB exams, where students have gained their Diplomas with Distinction, multiple students gaining Distinction results (A+) in grade and certificate exams and also High Distinction results (95 – 100%) in their theory exams.
His students have gone to win many 1st prizes from a range of different eisteddfods. Stevens patience and preparation for students have allowed them to also take out the champion title through success in Eisteddfod championships. Students of Stevens have also been awarded full music scholarships to prestigious private schools.
